Projekt A: A documentary about anarchist projects today

Financial crises and waves of refugees, social inequality and ecological catastrophes, terrorism and wars… Western civilization is like a bullet train accelerating toward a wall. And at the controls are governments that are not only incapable of solving people’s problems, but whose very existence is a problem.

Projekt A [2024] is a documentary that contradicts typical clichés about anarchism and makes one thing clear: another world is possible. It does so through numerous interviews with anarchist activists in different parts of Europe: at a refugee center in the Exarchia district of Athens; in the forests where protests against nuclear energy took place in Germany; at the headquarters of the CGT, the world’s largest anarcho-syndicalist organization, in Spain; and at the projects of the Catalan cooperative CIC and the Kartoffelkombinat group in Munich, also organized as a cooperative.

This isn’t a documentary for seasoned activists, but rather a way to introduce anarchist ideas to people completely unfamiliar with them. For this reason, it can sometimes feel a bit simplistic, and we would have liked to see a deeper exploration of the debates within anarchism, or the inclusion of other organizations with a longer anarchist tradition—albeit smaller than the CGT—such as the CNT. Nevertheless, it remains interesting to hear the activists who share their vision of an existence independent of the state and its structures, based on equal rights and with the goal of a solidarity-based and community-oriented economy.

As the filmmakers who created this documentary say, “Projekt A presents an alternative worldview and showcases some anarchist ideas for living and acting collectively. A form of society in which no one should have the power to control knowledge, natural resources, land, or other people.”

The documentary PROJEKT A delves into the multifaceted world of anarchists and breaks with the usual clichés of stone-throwing and chaotic individuals. Rather, it opens a window onto a movement that demands the impossible, that shakes the foundations of our society, and that, precisely for this reason, draws attention to the central, unresolved problems of our time. The film is about a political movement, its theory, and the people who fight for its realisation.

Hanna, Mariano, Didac, Margarita, and Makis are anarchists. They dream of a free society. They design concrete visions of a different world and try to put them into practice in their lives. They believe that human beings can live without domination, without the state, without police, without laws, and without justice: an absurd idea from today’s perspective.

Their lives are a struggle against authority, conventions, and prejudices. Whether in Spain, Greece, or Germany, everywhere they defend their ideals and, despite all the setbacks and state repression, they remain combative. Anarchism is a radical approach, and the protagonists of PROJEKT A question the fundamental principles of the capitalist world order.

And in this, they are no longer alone. Twenty years after the collapse of real socialism, broad sectors of society are also questioning capitalism as a viable social model. What alternatives does anarchism offer?

PROJEKT A delves into this idea, both ancient and new, and takes the viewer on a journey through anarchist projects.
