Update from Greece

We should never forget that parliamentary democracy is a deeply undemocratic institution. This was already noted as far back as the 1700s, if we recall Rousseau's comments on the Brittish. To quote Rudolf Rocker "Within the Socialist movement ifself the Anarchist represents the viewpoint that the war against capitalism must be at the same time a war against all institutions of political power, for in history economic exploitation has always gone hand in hand with political and social oppression". We may add that just as the commodity represents the alienated and reified result of exploited labor, one that has turned around and consumes its producer, parliamentary democracy reflects the parallel/correlate reification of political power as the political exploitation of the vast majority.

All is possible: strike, protest, occupy

The Austurian coal miners’ strike, called at the end of May by the principal unions representing the workers (CC.OO and UGT), indefinitely, to contest a brutal reduction in state support for the sector (over 60%), continues with what can only be described as heroic resistance on the part of the miners (demonstrations, occupation of mines, road blockades, local general strikes, etc).  Initially promised an economic reconversion plan, the latter has been abandoned by the Rajoy government in the fever to cut public expenses.  The consequences, for all of those who depend on the industry for their livelihood, are brutal.

Stories from 15M’s spain

http://colectivonovecento.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/eneko_rescate.jpg?w=510&h=273

The 100,000 million Euro bailout from the EU for spain’s failing bank system is a desperate attempt to put an end to the ongoing consequences of a brutal devaluation of capital (in this instance, all manner of real estate) and the accompanying collapse of the credit institutions which sustained the earlier capital expansion.  It is unlikely to be enough and will only deepen the country’s public debt.  Predictably, those who will pay for this will be the working classes and the beneficiaries of increasingly impoverished public social services.

Anti-Fascism: Lessons from the past

The constant stream of news from Greece of Golden Dawn fascists terrorising, harassing and beating immigrants is tragically not unique in our time, both in Greece and beyond, but gains new urgency with the party’s presence in parliament, a presence that serves to further legitimise the unacceptable.

15M, Occupy, Quebec Student Movement in Print

…we need all exuberant, floating, dancing, mocking, childish, and blissful art lest we lose our freedom above things that our ideal demands of us…. We should be able also to stand above morality — and not only to stand with anxious stiffness of a man who is afraid of slipping and falling any moment, but also to float above it and play. How then could we possibly dispense with art — and with the fool? (Nietzsche, The Gay Science)

Representation is at the heart of many of the social movements of this last year, a concern that extends to media representation.  Challenging not only how corporate media describe, speak of, picture the world in which we live and those who contest it, but also generating their own media, has been an immediate concern of these same movements.  The results are truly impressive: from manifestos, communiqués, fanzines to more extensive text, from poetry to comic strips, from video to graphic art, from radio to television, from websites to blogs.  The quantity is overwhelming and the quality is very often excellent and profound.

Touching Utopias: Reflections on Revolution in the Form of a Dreaming Wanderer’s Unfinished Spanish Travel Diary

…the final regime imagined by socialists cannot be fixed at a determined date by a sociological prediction; it is in the present.  It is not outside us; it is in our own hearts.  Socialism is being realized every day, under our very eyes, to the extent that we are able to conceive what socialist conduct is, to the extent that we know how to direct institutions and, consequently, to the extent that the socialist ethic is formed in our consciousness and in life.

George Sorel, The Ethics of Socialism

… revolutionaries come into existence only by means of the revolution.

                                                 Gustav Landauer, For Socialism

In themselves, forms-of-life cannot be said, described, only shown, named, that is in a necessarily singular context.

15M: Okupations and Situations

One road is open, more open than ever, to help bring about revolution and the collapse of the present system: to begin on a small scale, and voluntarily, immediately, on all sides, you are called, you and your friends!

                                                 Gustav Landauer, For Socialism

… there is no clear distinction between a 'political' activity and an act of friendship.

John Holloway, Change the World Without Taking Power

Okupied Social Centres in spain and elsewhere have played a fundamental role in the emergence and continuity of social movements.  Conceived as part of a broader anti-capitalist struggle, their existence puts question publicly the inviolability of private property, their internal organisation allows for experiments in self-management, their connection to other collectivities and groups apermits the elaboration of alternative communities and solidarities and as creative spaces, they allow for the expression of popular artistic forms.

In the wake of 15M, many buildings have been taken, both in Madrid and elsewhere, on the initiative of local neighbourhood assemblies.  Video testimonies, from Madrid, to this kind of anti-politics follow …

We Are All Greeks

To struggle through the state is to become involved in the active process of defeating yourself.

John Holloway, Change the World Without Taking Power

Elections in greece are scheduled for the 17th of June and what seems to lie in the balance is whether or not greece submits to all of the dictates of the Troika for the “stabilisation” of its’ economy, with one side of the political spectrum defending the already agreed to plans of austerity and the other side defending some modified accord with the same institutions, rejecting the earlier plans, quite rightly, as destructive of the national economy.  The latter position is expressed by the political party (coalition of parties) known as Syriza.  But perhaps a more fundamental question remains in the background, namely that of revolution against capitalism.
