The fear of chalk: Alex Shaefer

The artist Alex Schaefer has recently put to the test the limits of freedom of expression, limits revealed to be all too present.  The prohibition on chalking and the violence used against it (Occupy LA) however show far more than a state fearful of free speech; it exemplifies a state that expresses itself increasingly through violence, through the police, that the state and “politics” have been reduced to the policing of populations and that states of emergency are the norm of administration.  The ideal is pacification …
