Founded in 2001, Autistici/Inventati is a volunteer and free provider of email, websites, mailing lists, blogs, and communication tools focused on privacy for users who prefer not to rely on corporate platforms. According to the U.S. State Department, Autistici/Inventati hosts “roughly 16,000 mailboxes, 1,500 websites, 5,500 mailing lists, and 10,000 ‘blogs’” on its custom-built platform. On August 26, 2026, the U.S. government designated the Italian collective as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist,” citing its “far-left” politics.
The slide towards dictatorship through the gradual abandonment of democratic “rules” is not new. Nevertheless, the “Designation of Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist”[1] by the US State Department[2] on August 26 is not insignificant.
Autistici/Inventati not only provided a messaging service considered one of the most confidential in the world, but also a whole range of services, still confidential, for just about everything related to information and communication via the internet. The first, fundamental point is that A/I was simply respecting the original idea of ??the web, this now “outdated” idea which stipulated that “information wants to be free” on the internet, a mantra tirelessly chanted by the early builders of the global web in the 1990s,[3] including by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of hypertextualisation, and therefore of internet navigation. Of course, we have long known that the major web companies have relegated this idea to the realm of antiquity after having nonetheless capitalised on it. This idea of ??free communication has been perverted, with Google positioning itself at the forefront of this freedom-crushing movement,[4] through the means we all know about.
You who are reading this article, if your email goes through gmail, hotmail or wanadoo, please switch to a confidential email service: for a month now Google, Microsoft or Orange have been systematically sending A/I messages to spam, and since August 26, it has been impossible to connect to A/I regardless of the browser used.
The State Department claims: “Autistici/Inventati (A/I Collective) is an Italy-based extremist group that builds and operates the digital infrastructure for violent Antifa cells and other far-left militants across the world. A/I’s cadre of radical hackers and tech developers provide a full spectrum of services – including encrypted chats and email, web hosting, secure video conferencing and streaming, anonymity shields, and a suite of other technological tools – to Marxist, anarchist, and other left-wing extremist groups in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere. These tools are specifically designed to support the operations of far-left terrorist networks, built to enable them to organize, recruit, communicate, disseminate propaganda, share target information and tactics, and carry out violent attacks – all while remaining anonymous, untraceable, and beyond the reach of the law.”
According to the State Department, A/I hosted 16,000 email accounts, 1,500 websites, and 5,500 mailing lists. Individuals who funded A/I (which offered its users the opportunity to contribute from time to time, approximately once a year, without any obligation) are now liable under US law for supporting a terrorist organisation. The US “designation” concludes with a somewhat ludicrous list of claims of responsibility that A/I relayed, without any evidence being provided of A/I’s actual participation in the alleged violent acts.
As Serge Quadruppani had clearly shown in his pioneering work at the time, L’Antiterrorisme en France (1989) and then with La Politique de la peur (2011), or Philippe Godard in Il Consenso nell’epoca del terrorismo [The Consensus in the Age of Terrorism; published by Elèuthera, 2018], anti-terrorism has never aimed to put an end to the state of extreme violence or terror in our societies, but rather to maintain it, by justifying state violence.
By prohibiting us from using a website perfectly aligned with the fundamental principles of what some call “the first internet,” the US government[5] is unilaterally depriving us of a tool that in no way contradicted democracy, including its current imperfect form.[6] Providing information is not the same as organizing terrorist groups. Regardless of what the Trump administration may think, the attacks suffered here and there by foreign or illegitimate occupying forces will not cease simply because their actions will become increasingly difficult to publicise. In fact, the opposite is likely: if so-called fundamental freedoms are dwindling, the only means of “making oneself heard” will be to prioritise so-called extreme violence,[7] which will, in any case, always be more or less known and disseminated to the public, whatever form the dictatorship takes.
