To okupy, to appropriate, to re-appropriate that which was claimed by theft; a theft paid for with public monies. Today, in spain, okupation has become the central strategy of anti-capitalist politics, a politics that is not only opposed to State-Capital, but a politics which also creates in parallel a network of self-managed spaces of autonomy, the embryo of a different world free of the domination of capitalism.
On the morning of Friday, July 12, the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca – PAH of Barcelona announced a new occupation of an empty building in the neighbourhood of Raval. It is the 13th such occupation in catalunya and part of a larger action carried out by the PAH under the name of Obra Social La PAH whose aim is first and foremost to house evicted families, but also to defend the socialization of housing. The owner of the building is the bank CaixaBanc and formerly Banco de Valencia (absorbed by the former bank), which was bailed out with public monies on the order of 7.5 billion euros.
The okupations in catalunya are accompanied by the corralas okupations in Andalucía, numbering over a dozen today. Matched by okupied social centres and land occupations, an archipelago takes form.
