From protest to protest … radicalising the general strike in 15M´s spain

In some 80 cities in spain, over one million people protested the latest government budget cuts.  Called by the principal labour unions of the country, minority unions, social movements and 15M joined the protest as a "critical bloc", to distinguish themselves from the policies and demands of the two larger unions (UGT and CCOO).

… and the police, in Madrid, always concerned with democratic order …

The protests are fundamental to break the illusion of social and political consensus.  And yet, their limits are obvious.

The  Grupo de Trabajo de Política a Largo Plazo de Acampada Sol has placed before all the question of these limits of a simple politics of protest and the need to rethink and radicalise the general strike as an insurrectionary/revolutionary strike.

al empleado de la función pública, que piensa que no puede permitirse un mes sin trabajar, le van a dar la patada más pronto que tarde y se quedará sin sueldo;
el obrero que no se atreve a enfrentarse, por el bien de su familia, está muerto y enterrado;
el directivo que sigue haciendo fe en que aún se puede ir tirando, es carne de cañón, al que sustituirán por otro más barato;
al jubilado -especie en extinción- ya lo han puesto en conserva;
al desempleado, que siente el desamparo, se ríen viéndole lamerse las heridas, y le dejan a la intemperie;

To steal our wealth, to waste taxes, to lower salaries, to inflict suffering; they must pay, whatever the cost.

Demonstrations, concentrations, consumer strikes, one day general strikes, we know that they do not address the real problem.  We know and we accept; their limited efficacy is evident.

And yet, however difficult it is to organise a one day general strike, how much more so a general strike of a month.

Here lies the key and the Rubicon that must be crossed.  The education that we fed upon has led us to believe that this people will not cross this river, or perhaps they will.

With the convocation of a one day general strike by the leadership of the unions, the only benefit to be gained is to call attention to the government, nothing more.  The past offers a different lesson; resistance was given until what was sought was won.  For this reason we struggle but to prevent what others conquered before us from being taken away.  Nevertheless, our misery consumes us slowly; we count days, months, years, even generations, waiting for solutions.

Capitalism will not pity us – it does not belong to its’ genetic code to abolish slavery – however much the rage of the people; thus the ever increasing inequality.

The manipulators of language will endeavour to convince us that confronting this hydra is a titanic struggle, and that it is better to abandon such efforts.  And yet a month long struggle has the capacity to paralyse the very system – there is in fact a history of such strikes in different, specific sectors of the economy, such as transportation, mining – which is to say that it is in our hands whether we follow these precedents and extend them as a reference.

We live at a crucial time.  If one does not struggle for a month long general strike, the civil servant who does not believe that s/he can afford such a long time without work, will sooner or later find her/himself without a salary; the worker who does not dare to rise up for the good of her/his family is already dead and buried, the manager who continues to have faith that that there is always something to be had, is canon fodder, replaceable by someone less costly, the pensioner – a species on the verge of extinction –  has already been tinned, the unemployed, without support, is the object of ridicule and is left to the elements, the youth are without future.

In this way, during the month long strike, we would recover a time that is ours to debate organise and program our struggle.  And during this same moment we would recuperate a new time in which to propose and endeavour to create distinct ways to live, experiment with different forms of organisation and solidarity and collectively create a new reality beyond this inhuman system, thereby reinventing our collective subsistence.  The people have powerful weapons to triumph in the struggle against the ignominy of power.  Here, no one is saved and we should be realistic and withdraw together and for all.  It is time to stop launching fireworks; this only produces an irrational sentiment of victory or a calculus of expectations for leaders, but not instruments of reflection for the battle.  Greece had more than 15 one day general strikes in the last two years and it changed nothing, neither for those who hold power, nor for those who struggle for survival.

THEY WILL DO WITH US WHAT THEY WISH AND MUCH MORE IF WE DO NOT STRUGGLE FOR ALL.
